Tolerance Declaration

We EXPRESS our appreciation to the President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai on the successful Second Edition of World Tolerance Summit.

On the occasion, we also appreciate efforts exerted by His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance, Chairman of Board of Trustees of International Institute for Tolerance, to make the event more successful than the first edition.

The participants of the two-day event themed 'Tolerance in Multiculturalism: Achieving the Social, Economic and Humane Benefits of a Tolerant World’ lauded the Organising Committee of the World Tolerance Summit, and employees of International Institute for Tolerance extended their sincere appreciation for the hospitality extended to them, as well as the commendable management of the international programme.

ACKNOWLEDGE that United Arab Emirates is a good example of Inclusion and Tolerance, as evident in the co-existence of more than 200 nationalities living harmoniously and peacefully without fear, conflict and discrimination in the country;

KNOWING that diversity of our world's many religions, languages, cultures and ethnicities is not a pretext for conflict, but a treasure that enriches us all.

NOTICING that Tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference. It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human;

KNOWING that peaceful Co-existence, Tolerance and Harmony among all nations and cultures can be significantly enhanced by promoting unity in diversity, inter-religious, inter-cultural and inter-civilisation constructive dialogue and education;

RECOGNISING that the teaching of the GOLDEN RULE which says “Treat others the way you want to be treated” is the best tool to promote tolerance, human dignity, mutual respect and harmony and it is a pathway to achieve peaceful coexistence and solidarity among members of different ethnic groups, cultures and religions in the world as it is a common and shared value

CONVINCED that peace in the world is possible only when we make peace within ourselves, our families and in our respective communities;

We the participants hereby affirm that:-
  • Tolerance and mutual respect is a way to disarm fear, to open the world for better change and to lay the foundations for lasting peace. Building tolerance, mutual respect and understanding of the others is fundamental for the 21st century.  In an increasingly globalised world – in which societies are growing more diverse – tolerance is central to living together.
  • Tolerance promotion and the shaping of attitudes of openness, mutual listening and solidarity should take place in schools and universities and through non-formal education, at home and in the workplace
  • Tolerance is more essential than ever before in this age marked by the globalisation of the economy and by rapidly increasing mobility, communication, integration and interdependence, large-scale migrations and displacement of populations, urbanisation and changing social patterns.
  • Education is the most effective means of preventing intolerance. The first step in tolerance education is to teach people what their shared rights and freedoms are, so that they may be respected, and to promote the will to protect those of others. Education for tolerance should be considered an urgent imperative; that is why it is necessary to promote systematic and rational tolerance teaching methods that will address the cultural, social, economic, political and religious sources of intolerance - major roots of violence and exclusion.
  • We pledge to support and implement programmes of social science research and education for tolerance, a culture of peace, and non-violence.
  • We commit to promote tolerance, respect and human dignity for all.
  • We encourage initiatives that aim to reduce negative perceptions and attitudes towards refugees and migrants
  • Commit  to deepen our solidarity as citizen of the world with each other and to broaden the space for common action for the good of all humanity and the preservation of the environment;
  • Commit to combat hatred, prejudice, intolerance and stereotyping on the basis of religion or culture as this represents a significant challenge to peaceful co-existence and harmony;
  •  To walk the talk by being a living example of the change  we want to see in the world
